Pope Benedict

I had another post in mind for today but it will have to wait.

As a devout Catholic I had to stop all the hustle and bustle of daily life with three kids, and sit down to watch history in the making. Even if you are not Catholic, I'm sure you may already know that Pope Benedict has stepped down as Pope but, today, he actually leaves the Vatican.

To watch him board the helicopter was surprisingly emotional for me.  Even though he stepped down after only a little over 8 years I have the utmost respect for The holy father. His resignation was a surprise and is certainly unprecedented in modern day. The last time a Pope stepped down was over 500 years ago, and it was under political pressure. You would have to go back 700 years to find a Pope that resigned for personal reasons as this Pope has.

As I watch the news, and watch as the helicopter as it flies over Rome I listen as the bells toll, like they did when he became Pope and like they do for every Pope; I realize that Pope Benedict is the spiritual leader of 1.2  BILLION Catholics around the ENTIRE WORLD. Billion. I'm stunned.
(I got the number 1.2 from the ABC news Anchors who sat with the Cardinal of Washington)

So I had to search the web for a little more info and found a blog called Fallible Blogma.  He has some staggering facts about the religion of my birth and if you want to read his entire article please do, it's very interesting!

I'll start with the number we all know, there are approximately 6.7 BILLION people on the face of the earth.  Approximately one third of the humans on earth consider themselves to be Christian, for those of you who are not that great at math.....like ME, one third equals to about 2.2 billion (of the 6.7 Billion) and approximately half of those (2.2 Billion) 1.1 billion are Roman Catholic! Whew.... I'll give you a moment to take that all in.

So as I sit on my sofa watching the Holy Father fly away to his temporary home Castel Gondolfo, I also watch my 2 year old son play with his toy trains, I look up to to say a quick prayer of Thanks to the Lord for all of my blessings. For getting me through some of the toughest things a person could ever face, with grace. I thank the Lord for giving me my three Children, and for my loving family.

Then I thank the Lord for Giving us Pope Benedict. He was a strong leader and has set the bar a little higher for future Popes as did Pope John Paul II for him. I thank the Lord for giving me, the rest of 1.2 billion Catholics, All Christians and all of humanity the opportunity to witness history in the making.

History is not always butterflies, sweet chubby cheeked cherubs and gooey cakes in the shape of hearts. Sometimes the thought of life in history as it is in present day, is brutal and deplorable and downright heart breaking but not today. Today is a beautiful day and many of us have so much to be thankful for. I know I do.

For being a great spiritual leader and example for us all to listen to our hearts, I thank you your Holiness. May the Lord continue to be with you.

Gracias Papa Benedicto Gracias
