Getting Greener

I’ve been talking to my husband a lot lately about going green. I know it’s not that important to him but for me it seems like the biggest deal in the world. I think since I’m getting older and we’re talking about having kids it’s becoming increasingly important to leave the planet a better place than we found it, you know? 

It’s hard for me to imagine talking to my kids about recycling when we don’t even do it ourselves. So far I’ve been making changes to our lives that are relatively painless, stuff he doesn’t even notice, like looking into green energy in texas and finding out more about solar panels. I talked to Mark for a while about getting a car that runs at least partly on electricity but he told me that was a dumb idea and that we couldn’t afford one in the first place. 

I think he’s probably right about that but it sure would be an outward signal to all our friends that we really care about the environment! He’s had some good suggestions, too, like starting a garden and a compost heap as well as doing trash pick ups along the stream in our neighborhood on the weekends. Stuff like that is easy enough and I feel good about helping out in our neighborhood as well as globally, you know? 

I love that my husband’s so practically minded but sometimes I really feel like he needs to get better at risk taking! I haven’t told him yet but I’ve been talking seriously with a guy who may be able to hook us up with solar panels for the roof. I know my husband’s going to balk and talk about how ugly and expensive they are but long run they’d save us money I think and they sure would be good for the planet. Reducing our carbon footprint is my number one priority at the moment, if you can’t tell!
